A growing interest in the field of cellular materials was witnessed over the last 20 years. Therefore, this workshop will present the latest advances on multifunctional lightweight cellular metals, their manufacturing methods and their performance for functional and structural engineering applications. These materials are available as closed-cell and open-cell foams, hollow-sphere foams, syntactic foams, periodic and optimized truss structures and honeycombs. Structures based on cellular metals with interconnected porosity are extensively used as heat exchangers, filters, electrodes, shock absorbers, etc., taking advantages of their high specific surface area and high thermal and electrical conductivities. On the other hand, structures based on cellular metals with closed-porosity are used in structural engineering applications (e.g., automotive, aerospace, industrial equipment and building construction) that require lightweight structures with high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, high impact energy absorbing capacity and/or with a good damping of noise and vibration. Currently, these environmentally friendly structures are used in reducing the weight of vehicles’ body and, therefore, the vehicle’s fuel consumption (also minimizing carbon dioxide emissions), as well as providing enhanced active and passive safety, comfort and performance.
